Carlos Sainz gets to the points in the Azerbaijan GP
Saturday, 26 October 2026:
- Race: P10, 51 laps.
Carlos Sainz came back from fourteenth to tenth in an Azerbaijan GP defined by two Safety Car periods that shook up the race.
The Williams race driver struggled in the first stint on Medium tyres, but got back up to speed when he switched to the Soft compound.
The Spanish driver gained six places in the first Safety Car after avoiding a series of accidents that prompted a second Safety Car period.
From there on, he passed Oscar Piastri when the McLaren went wide into Turn 1 and later Nico Hülkenberg in the closing laps to snatch his first point since the Canadian GP.
QUOTES:
“I'm happy to get a point after yesterday’s penalty and I think the team deserved it. It was a difficult race, but we had a good restart after the safety car, doing a good job with tyre management and managed to get into the points towards the end of the race. These upgrades are a good sign of progress, but we know it’ll take a bit more to get in the points regularly. Hopefully we’ll be able to have a bit more fun fighting in the midfield for the remaining races”.
