Carlos Sainz, tenth in Qualifying at the Singapore GP

Saturday, 21 September 2024
- Free Practice 3: P6, 1:30.807, 20 laps
- Qualifying: P10, 16 laps

  • Carlos Sainz prepares himself for a recovery drive from tenth place in the Singapore GP after crashing out on Saturday at the beginning of Q3.
  • The Ferrari race driver aborted his first timed-lap in Q1, but he still managed to squeeze a 1:30.988 from that tyre in this second try. He then switched to a new unit and improved to 1:30.670.
  • The Spaniard started Q2 on a used set of tyres, on which he clocked a 1:30.580 in his first outing. In the second one, he improved four tenths –1:30.108– on a new set to move up to sixth and advance to the following round.
  • In Q3, though, he was surprised by the low temperature of his tyres and Carlos crashed into the wall when he was about to start his first timed lap. Moments before, he had had to slow down and move to the dirty lane to let by a car that was on a timed lap. This circumstance compromised the preparation of his tyres.

QUOTES:
“A very strange qualifying session that obviously didn’t end well for us. Right before my push lap in Q3 I had to let a McLaren by, moving on to the dirty line, and then quickly came back to push in the last corner. I misjudged the temperature of the tires and the grip and lost the rear, hitting the wall. It’s a costly mistake on my side and I’m sorry for the team. The race is tomorrow and, even though is going to be very difficult, Singapore is always a long race with opportunities along the way. We will try everything to gain some positions and bring home good points".
