Carlos Sainz fights for Pole, will start third at the Saudi Arabian GP

Saturday, 26 March 2022
-       Free Practice 3: P4, 1:30.009, 22 laps
-       Qualifying: P3, 1:28.402, 23 laps

  • Carlos qualified third at the Saudi Arabian GP and tomorrow he will start the second race of the season from the clean side of the grid.
  • The Spaniard of Ferrari made it through Q1 (1:29.855) with a single set of Soft tyres, even though there was a red flag following a crash from Nicholas Latifi when he was in his first push lap.
  • Q2 was stopped for nearly an hour following a heavy crash from Mick Schumacher. Prior to the red flag, Carlos had run on the used set of Soft tyres from Q1. Afterwards, he put another used set of tyres and improved to 1:28.686 to lead the standings.
  • Carlos led the timesheets in Q3 after his first outing (1:28.402), which was on a used set of Soft tyres. These gave him a better feeling than the new ones, and in fact when he put on a new set for his final push lap he did struggle with grip on the rear-end.

QUOTES:
“It was a good quali overall, putting good laps together every time we went out. Interesting enough, I’ve been fast and more comfortable on a used set of softs than on the new set, so maybe I should have also done my second push on Q3 on a used tyre. We’ll look into that for sure. In any case, the feeling with the car has been better so far this weekend and we’ll keep digging into the data to extract the maximum out of the car".

"“Now we have to focus on tomorrow. The target will be of course to bring the pace of today’s quali into the race. We have saved several sets to give us different strategic options in case the race gets tricky as last year, so we’ll try to make everything work. Lets race".
