Carlos Sainz, fifth on the Starting Grid of the Abu Dhabi GP

Saturday, 11 December 2021
-    Free Practice 3: P9, 1:24.595, 20 laps
-    Qualifying: P5, 1:22.992, 22 laps

  • Carlos will start the Abu Dhabi GP from fifth place after a final lap in Q3 in which he nurtured the tyres to find some really valuable thousandths of a second in the final sector.
  • The Ferrari race driver made it through Q1 (1:23.624) on the Soft tyre, although he also used the Medium. In Q2 (1:23.174) he went through two sets of the Soft compound.
  • The Soft tyre struggled to last the entire lap, but thanks to Carlos’ handling he improved to 1:22.992 in Q3, 224 milliseconds faster than in his previous attempt.

"We are pretty satisfied with my performance today since yesterday was one of the most difficult Fridays in a long time and we’ve managed to recover well. We worked hard to put together a competitive car so thanks to the entire team. This session confirms l’ve done a solid progress in quali since the beginning of the year, so that’s another positive from today. Sector three was key: not pushing the tyres too much on the first two sectors and going for it at the end translated into a good lap. Looking at the timesheet, it could have been even better since Lando is only hundreds of a second ahead of me. Tomorrow in the race it’s not going to be easy to pass but we will try our best to give him a good fight and gain some positions. I want to end my first season with Scuderia Ferrari on a high. Let[‘s go racing!".
