- Race: P6, 66 laps
- Carlos Sainz finished sixth in a Spanish GP that was marked by strategy and tyre choice, which was not optimal in the case of the Spaniard.
- Sixth on the starting grid, the Ferrari race driver had a very strong opening stint on Soft tyres in which he passed on track his teammate to move up to fifth.
- His race was compromised by his first pit-stop, which happened on Lap 15 while other drivers chose to go longer.
- The Spaniard switched to Mediums for his second run, which he started by undercutting Lewis Hamilton for fourth, entering podium contention. The performance of this tyre, though, was not the best.
- On the final stint, he was forced to change to Hard tyres instead of Softs as other cars, which proved to be faster. This meant he was not able to hold position and he crossed the finish line in sixth.
QUOTES:
“It was a difficult race but we gave it our best. Stopping early and finishing the race on the Hard tyre didn’t turn out to be the optimal strategy today, but we only know this with hindsight after the chequered flag".
"In any case, we were lacking a bit of pace this weekend in general and we need to work to improve for next weekend in Austria".
"A massive thank you goes to every single fan that came to the track today and also to those who followed and supported us from home. A home race for a driver is always special and Barcelona is no exception for me".
