- Race: P6, 70 laps
- Carlos Sainz recovered from P12 on the grid to P6 at the finish line in the Styrian GP, where a solid race pace and the strategy were instrumental in him climbing up the grid.
- On the Medium tyre, the Ferrari driver recovered three positions coming into his pit-stop, which he pushed back to Lap 41 to overcut most of the cars of the midfield.
- The Spaniard returned to the track on the Hard tyre. He passed Sebastian Vettel to move up to sixth. He aimed for fifth place, but he had to unlap himself from Lewis Hamilton, which ultimately cost him some crucial time.
QUOTES:
“Strong race and good result for the team! We had good pace from the very beginning until the end".
“I managed to do a very long first stint, doing very good laps once I was in free air to overcut almost the entire midfield".
“The pit stop was spot on and that gave us a chance to chase Lando for P5. I had a lot of pace on the Hard tyre, but unfortunately, I was stuck behind Hamilton trying to unlap myself for too long and that slowed me down and damaged a bit my tyres. By the time I was through it was already too late".
“Tomorrow we’ll start working for the second race here. We have a good opportunity to improve and fight for another good result".
