An accident ruins Carlos Sainz’s Azerbaijan GP when he was in the podium

Sunday, 15 September 2024
- Race: P18, 49 laps

  • Carlos Sainz was involved in a crash with two laps to go. At that moment he had put himself in third place and was narrowing on a podium finish at the Azerbaijan GP.
  • The Ferrari race driver started from third place, but lost one position in the first few meters. From then on, he focused on tyre management. He was the fastest driver on track on the stint with Hard tyres.
  • Carlos started the second stint nine seconds behind the leaders, but his strong pace on the Hard tyre allowed him to close the gap and catch Leclerc and Pérez in the final few laps.
  • With two laps to go, the Ferrari driver moved up to third when he overtook Sergio Pérez in the first corner. At the exit of the second one, though, both cars touched and they were forced to retire.

QUOTES:
“It's a real shame, the important thing is that we're both okay after the crash but it’s obviously frustrating. I stayed on the normal racing line and didn’t do anything strange, the same as every other lap, so I didn’t expect the contact on my rear tyre. It’s part of racing but it hurts and we lost a lot of points today".

"I was having a very good race and was very quick. I think P3 or even P2 would’ve been possible, but it is what it is".

"Time to turn the page and focus on Singapore".

COMING UP:
