Good performance without a fitting reward for Carlos Sainz in the Austrian GP

Sunday, 2 July 2023
-    Race: P4, 71 laps

  • Carlos Sainz put together a remarkable performance in the Austrian GP, even though in the end he finished in fourth place, outside of the podium.
  • Third in the Starting Grid, the Spaniard pressed his teammate right from the start but respected the previous agreement with the team, which consisted in not fighting for position to try and build a gap to the fourth-placed car.
  • On Lap 15, both Ferraris pitted at the same time to seize a Virtual Safety Car and a slow stop cost Carlos time and track positions.
  • The Spaniard overtook Lando Norris and then Lewis Hamilton to move back up to third place.
  • During his comeback, though, he went over the track limits and received a five-second penalty that he served during his second pit stop.
  • Carlos displayed his best defensive driving to hold on to the podium as Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez attacked him, and he was able to keep them at bay until Lap 61 of 71.

QUOTES:
“It was a very solid race even though I’m not happy with the final result, as I think we deserved a double podium today".

“I felt very quick and comfortable with the car but after the first stop the race was compromised as we lost time and positions. I did my best to push hard and recover, with some good overtaking, but unfortunately I received the penalty for track limits".

“In the end I tried absolutely everything to defend from Checo but couldn't hold on to that place on the podium".

“Things to review, but in general we need to be happy with the progress made and we need to keep pushing in this direction".
