- Race: P5, 71 laps
- Carlos Sainz executed a very solid race, recovering from tenth at the Starting Grid to fifth at the chequered flag.
- The Spaniard of Ferrari was one of the few drivers to take the start on the Hard tyre, which made de first stint more demanding for him when it came to holding on to a good pace. This strategy paid off in the second part of the race when he switched to the Medium compound.
- Ninth after his pit-stop, the Spaniard set off on a recovery drive on Medium tyres that took him to fifth place after passing Daniel Ricciardo on the penultimate lap and then taking advantage of Sergio Pérez’s time penalty.
QUOTES:
"I’m leaving Austria feeling confident of the work we are doing weekend after weekend. Today we executed a smooth race with good strategy, great tyre management and teamwork. We chose to start on Hards, which we knew would make us struggle in the first few laps. That cost me a couple of positions at the start due to the lack of grip but I knew my race was not about lap 1. The target was to extend the first stint as much as possible and I managed to maintain a very solid pace without losing too much race time. I actually went very long before stopping for the Mediums and from there it was flat out until the checkered flag. I caught up quickly to the cars ahead after passing Yuki and then thanks to our teamwork with Charles and a good overtake on Daniel I managed to cross the line less than 10 seconds behind Checo for P5. We’ve had two good Sundays here in Austria but we are still far from where we want. The ambition and motivation is high, so we’ll keep pushing hard to improve for the upcoming races".
