Carlos Sainz, sixth on the grid of the Mexican GP after an eventful Qualifying

Saturday, 6 November 2021
-    Free Practice 3: P5, 1:18.029, 20 laps
-    Qualifying: P6, 1:16.761, 23 laps

  • The Spanish Ferrari race driver made the cut in Q1 setting a 1:17.517 despite the flags and a momentarily technical issue in his power unit.
  • After being randomly called to the weighbridge, his Q2 was compromised by traffic on the fast-sweeping corners. He still made it to the final round with a 1:17.248 on Medium tyres.
  • In Q3 Carlos was finally able to get into a rhythm with his SF21, clinching sixth place of the Starting Grid (1:16.761) in the first clean lap he had in the entire session.

QUOTES:
"This was one of the most eventful and stressful qualifyings of my career. After the engine issue, the flags and the traffic, the result at the end isn’t too bad, but I’ve been fast all weekend and wanted more. With so many things going on I wasn’t able to get into the right rhythm and didn’t had a clean lap until the last attempt in Q3. The lap was not even a perfect one, but given how the session unfolded I cannot be too disappointed, although I would have preferred to have the same feeling with the car as in free practice”.

“The race will be challenging as with thin air you have to manage tyres and temperatures. The start will be very important. The dirty side is specially tricky here in Mexico but we’ll try our best to maximize our starting position. We’ll go for it and try to score good points!".
