- Free Practice: P2, 1:05.983, 32 laps
- Qualifying: P3, 1:04.581, 25 laps
- Carlos Sainz will start Sunday’s Austrian GP from the third place of the grid after an unusual Qualifying session were many drivers lost their lap-times due to exceeding track-limits.
- The Ferrari race driver made it through Q1 (1:05.339) with a single set of Soft tyres, but in Q2 (1:04.975) he had to use two fearing that he could lose his first lap-time due to track-limits.
- In Q3, the Spaniard clinched a spot in the second row of the Starting Grid (1:04.581) with two spotless outings that did not leave any room to discussion.
- This will compromise his chance in the Q3 of Saturday’s Sprint Shootout, where he will be forced to run on used Soft tyres.
QUOTES:
"Overall it was a positive day for me and the team, as we will be starting P2 and P3 on Sunday. The car felt strong all day and I was fast from the very beginning, which is always a positive sign. We don’t really know how our pace compares to the others, but I’m really look forward to racing tomorrow and Sunday".
"Despite this good result, I think we should work together with the FIA to find alternative ways to decide track limits quicker and more efficiently. I had good lap on my first attempt in Q2 and I was already preparing for Q3 when we had to go out again since there were doubts about my lap. This meant I had to use the extra set of Softs we had saved for the Sprint qualifying tomorrow and it could have been avoided, as my lap was not deleted".
