- Free Practice 3: P6, 1:16.252, 23 laps
- Qualifying: P10, 1:16.062, 21 laps
- Carlos Sainz managed to make his way to Q3 in his maiden Qualifying as a Williams race driver and tomorrow he will take the start of the Australian GP from tenth place. Today was the first time in ten years that Williams placed its two cars in the last round of the Melbourne Qualifying.
- The Spaniard set the thirteenth fastest time in Q1 (1:16.360) and he was seventh in Q2 (1:15.931) to clinch a spot in the fight for pole position.
- Carlos feels that he didn’t make the most of the potential of the Soft tyre. In fact, his fastest lap in Q3 (1:16.062) didn’t improve the time he had previously set in Q2.
QUOTES:
“First of all, I’m very happy for the entire team, for Alex and for myself. It’s my first Qualifying with Williams and we have achieved our main objective of getting into Q3 with both cars. The hard work that everyone has done during the winter has payed off with a great step forward and I’m proud of the team"..
“On my side, I had a bit of a scrappy Qualifying to be honest. However, I’m not concerned. There are many things that I still need to understand from this car and I’m sure better laps will come soon!”.
“Tomorrow under rain I will also have to adapt quickly, but I’m excited about the race. We will try to maximize every opportunity. This is only the beginning!”.
